Abstract
Adaptive histogram equalisation (AHE) has been successfully applied in medical image contrast enhancement for computer assistance in imaging diagnosis. To reduce the noise magnification effect it needs to clip the local histograms with a fixed factor, which however, also limits the contrast increment in useful signal regions. In this paper, a novel AHE algorithm has been developed to solve the dilemma by introducing a dynamic histogram clipping mechanism. In addition, we also propose a general algorithmic frame for the AHE method. The frame describes an AHE algorithm with three modules and thus allows the integration of various methods to these modules in the same environment.
