Abstract
The default network has been one of the hot topics of research in cognitive neuroscience in recent years, and studies have reported that it may be involved in a variety of cognitive activities and that certain psychiatric disorders are associated with its abnormal activities. However, the directional connectivity relationships (effective connectivity patterns) between major brain regions within the default network are still unclear. In this study, the effective connectivity patterns between four core brain regions of the default network were explored using an international cutting-edge spectral dynamic causal modeling algorithm. The experimental results revealed that the posterior cingulate gyrus within the default network receives information input from the medial prefrontal and bilateral inferior parietal lobes, and may play the role of an information aggregation center; while the bilateral inferior parietal lobes have information input to both the medial prefrontal, and posterior cingulate gyrus, and may play the function of information drive and regulation within the default network. We believe that the changes in effective connectivity of nodes within the DMN accompanied by changes in information transmission are helpful for our deeper understanding of the function of the default network and have potential reference applications for the study of related psychiatric disorders.
