Abstract
The newly applied targeting and alignment system for the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer’s (NPOI) mini-periscope and beam compressor feed system is described. This system was designed and integrated into normal use for the ease of the alignment process and allows feed system alignments to be simplified and repeatable in day-to-day operations. The design was inspired by the current vacuum feed targeting system but updated to cater to the specific needs of the new system. 3D printing, machining, and off-the-shelf components were used to fabricate and assemble the devices. Herein, the hardware design, integration, and in-use practices are described. Future plans for further upgrading the targeting system are also discussed in terms of motorized actuators, wireless controllers, and auto alignment.
