Abstract
This paper used the text mining approaches to investigate the Chinese color terms in Song-dynasty lyrics and to explore the history, chromatics, linguistics and folklore reflected by colors in the Song Dynasty. The colorful Song Dynasty was observed through the color terms in the lyrics. Using the Python programming language to mine the text, this paper 1) extracting and analyzing the frequencies of all colors in the Complete Song-Dynasty Lyrics. Red, yellow, and green were found to be the 3 highest-frequency hues. 2) explored Chinese color terms and the collocations of red and white through the method of dual-direction extracting. The color term frequency ranking bar charts and collocation frequency ranking lists were obtained. The feminine characteristics and Chinese characters’ evolution were revealed in the collocations of red. The informal and romantic language characteristics and the existence of dialect and fairy tales were revealed in the collocations of white. 3) explored the top 20 poets’ preferences for using the collocations of red and white, as well as the popularity of these collocations in the Song Dynasty through the method of word co-occurrence. This paper could provide quantitative analyses for further exploration of the Song-dynasty lyrics and color aesthetics.
