12 July 1993 Fiber optic distributed temperature sensor using Raman backscattering

Abstract
A commercial instrument for distributed temperature measurements has been used with germanium doped silica optical fiber to investigate the technique and test the accuracy and precision of the technique. Slightly more than 1.2 km of fiber was used, 25 to 35 meters of which could be uniformly heated to approximately 550 degree(s)C in an oven. The ratio of the anti-Stokes to Stokes intensities was used to determine the temperature along the fiber length.
