Abstract
Many video compression systems use motion-compensated prediction to take advantage of the temporal redundancy. Typically, the motion compensation is done on a block-by-block basis using a fixed block size. This paper examines methods to improve motion estimation and compensation through the use of optical flow and adaptive block-based methods. The basic idea in both approaches is the same: to use larger blocks for regions of the image that have less detailed texture, and to use smaller blocks for more complicated regions. The best way to obtain the motion vectors for each block is examined in detail.
