Abstract
We propose a lossless volumetric data compression method using a procedure for decomposition based upon region growing (DBR) in the 3D space combined with conventional lossless data compression techniques. We provide a comparative analysis of lossless volumetric data compression using the 3D DBR and 2D DBR methods with commonly-used data compression tools such as gzip and compress, as well the more recent tool bzip2. The best results were obtained with DBR combined with bzip2 or bzip2 on its own. The minimum entropy obtained after applying DBR is much smaller than the best compression results showing that better compression techniques can be explored to obtain higher compression.
