Abstract
A requirement for high-speed cine-radiographic examination of the flight of metallic foreign objects in gas turbines has led to the development of a cine-radiographic systerri suitable for use with constant-potential x-ray sources. The new system has four elements:- ( 1 ) A continuous x-ray source. ( 2 ) A high-gainx-ray image intensifier tube. ( 3 ) A rotating-prism high-speed camera. ( 4 ) A pulse generator. Synchronising impulses are generated within the high-speed camera and these are used to control the pulse generator, which in turn provides gating pulses to the intensifier tube, so that it is switched in step with the. framing action of the camera. The system has so far been used at speeds up to 10,000 frames. s-1 with exposure times down to 10 us. Records have been obtained showing the progress of objects moving at 120 metres. s-1, and the process of pouring castings has also been studied with the equipment.
