Abstract
Studies have been conducted to determine whether learning effects are present in contrast detail or receiver operating characteristic (ROC) observer performance tests. Anecdotal responses by more than 20 observers report the presence of learning in both types of observer performance tests. Such learning effects are reported to be strongest during viewing of the first few test im-ages. Detailed investigation of the responses from over 17,000 film readings failed to show a statistically significant learning effect.
