A compact near-eye visor system that can guide light from a display to the eye could transform mixed reality technology. Unfortunately, existing implementations of such a visor either suffer from small field of view or chromatic aberrations. See-through quality and vergence-accommodation conflict further make the overall performance of the visors unsuitable for a seamless mixed reality experience. Metasurfaces are an emerging class of nanophotonic elements, which can dramatically reduce the size of optical elements while adding new functionalities. I will present our research on metasurface freeform optics, and explain how such metasurface optics can potentially enable the ultimate miniaturization of the near-eye visor without sacrificing any performance.
