Abstract
Prodigiosin is a kind of tripyrrole cyclic pigment produced by diverse microorganisms with a wide spectrum of biological activities and extensive applications. Here, bibliometric analysis was used to evaluate the biological activities, mechanisms, and applications of prodigiosin. A total of 1,227 related publications between 1990 and 2023 collected from the Web of Science Core Collection database were extracted for in-deep research. The results showed that the number of publications of prodigiosin was increasing rapidly. Bibliometric analysis showed that change for the growth conditions of the strain influenced prodigiosin yields, and its unique molecular structures with pyrrolyl pyrromethane provided a wide variety of biological activities. Applications and mechanisms of prodigiosin for anticancer, antibacterial, antimalarial, and immunosuppressive are important research topics and hotspots in medicine, new energy, and cosmetic field. However, many challenges are still around the field of prodigiosin. High production cost has limited the application and some regulation mechanisms remains unclear. The bibliometric analysis in this study would provide a reference for researchers, and support the development of prodigiosin in the future.
