Abstract
The theory of track-while-image operation of a coherent laser radar was initiated by Enders, who considered the tracking of a spatially-resolved, speckle target using a sequence of intensity, range, or joint range-intensity images in an uplooking (background-free) radar scenario. The present paper extends Enders' work to a downlooking scenario, in which every pixel in the image frame contains a reflecting element--either target or background. Linear least-squares trackers using intensity, range, and joint range-intensity frame centroids are studied, with tracking performance established through Riccati-equation evaluations and computer simulations.
