Abstract
FTIR reflectance measurements on coatings containing metallic flakes with diameter of the order of the wavelength of light, show a combination of reflectance-absorbance (R-A) and specular reflectance spectra. These effects are not superimposed and in fact occur in distinct regions of the spectrum. For a given flake size, light will be reflected when the wavelength of the incident light is much shorter than the flake diameter and for other cases will be diffracted. For the diffraction case only the specularly reflected light will be collected and for the reflection case the dominant spectrum will be due to the R-A.
