Abstract
High-density magnetic recording channels may be modeled as partial response (PR) channels. While it is possible to use PR channels for 'uncoded' information, it is likely that further improvement can be achieved by using an error correcting code. Codes for PR channels should have large minimum Euclidean distances, short maximum zero-run lengths, and high rates. A fast decoding algorithm with short decoding delay must also be available. It is shown that there exist convolutional code cosets that satisfy these requirements.
