Abstract
A compression method of 3D scattered dataset based on octree is proposed in this paper. The Gaussian curvature of a surface is used as the criterion to compress the dataset. The points containing more structural information of the shape of a surface will be kept. At the same time, the 3D object surface is decomposed into a set of Local Surface Patches (LSPs) using the octree model, and the time-consuming process of can be avoided. Practical experiments show that this method can achieve higher compression rate.
