Abstract
We describe the design and ongoing research of a Disaster Recovery System that features uncertainty visualization and distributed computing. Our system, DiRect, is intended for use by firefighters, policemen, and rescue personnel to aid in disaster recovery missions. These missions can run the gamut from natural disasters like earthquakes and fire to situations like 9/11. The use of visuals and a distributed communication infrastructure will help rescuers make better informed, more accurate and quicker decisions. In this paper, we discuss the need for such a system as well as the resulting infrastructure architecture we have developed. We further describe how information is collected using ICS (Incident Command System) protocol and is stored and fused. Finally we describe how this information will be visualized by the system. A goal of DiRect is to capture the uncertainties of the information and visually present this for more informed decisions. Current results are presented.
