25 October 2004 New materials for broadband optical amplifiers

Abstract
An emission, which covers the spectral range from the O to L-band, was observed from a Ni2+-doped zinc-alumino-silicate glass at room temperature. The emission lifetime was about 440 msec at 5 K and decreased with an increase temperature to 240 msec at 300 K. The emission band was identified as the downward d-d 3T2g(3F)→3A2g(3F) transition of octahedral Ni2+ ions. It was confirmed from X-ray diffraction analyses and transmission electron microscope observations that ZnAl2O4 spinel nano-crystals containing octahedral Ni2+ ions acted as emission centers. It is expected that the Ni2+-doped glass has a potential for a broadband amplification medium.
