Abstract
The ROI coding in JPEG2000 allows certain parts of the image are of higher importance than others. It offers a fast and efficient implementation for coding and transmitting remote sensing images. In this paper, we present a new ROI coding scheme called the PMBAShift method that not only retains advantages of the Maxshift method, but also alleviates the drawbacks of both ROI coding methods in JPEG2000. Four strategies are used to improving ROI coding efficiency. First, the PMBAShift shifts up the partial most significant bitplanes of ROI coefficients, which are no overlapping with any bitplanes of BG. It can ensure that the most important bitplanes of ROI coefficients are firstly coded and transmitted. Secondly, the most significant bitplanes of BG coefficients and general significant bitplanes of ROI coefficients are shifted up by bitplanes alternating scaling, which enables the flexible adjustment of compression quality in ROI and BG. thirdly, the least significant bitplanes of ROI coefficients are obtained in the original position. Finally, the least significant bitplanes of BG coefficients are shifted down and no overlap with any bitplane. The experiments for remote sensing images show that the new method can not only combine the advantages of the two standard methods of JPEG2000, but also efficiently compress multiple ROIs according to different degrees of interest without any shape information.
