Abstract
In the present study, a universal split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) device has been employed to investigate the dynamic properties and damage patterns of alumina (A95) ceramic under axial compression under strain rate ranging from 280~400s-1. Different shapes of loading pulses were generated with variety shaper materials. By changing input pulse shape, the experiment results showed that the damage patterns changes from fragmentation by axial splitting to totally smashed into acerate pieces. Based on the experiment results and other literature data, a Johnson-Holmquist 2 (JH-2) constitute model parameters were determined. The mechanical model and constants were used to provide inside details of A95 ceramic damage models under SHPB test under different input pulse shapes. A direct impact experiment was held to compare with the dynamic numerical results, in order to clarify the A95 ceramic response under low velocity impact and the applicability for JH-2 model.
