Abstract
The visual (and thus subjective) assessment of displayed information is usually time consuming and expensive because a large sample size is needed to overcome the inherent variability among observers. Objective and efficient metrics that quantify visual differences between (details of) images are therefore of great benefit when the perceptual quality of displayed information needs to be assessed or optimized [145]. Computational visual difference or distinctness metrics can for instance be applied to evaluate (1) image displays, (2) (virtual) scene generators, (3) image compression methods, (4) image reproduction methods, (5) camouflage measures, and (6) traffic safety devices.
