Abstract
Final-year students are individuals in the early adulthood period who have almost completed all their studies and are currently writing their thesis. While completing a thesis, students will experience difficulties until they are threatened with dropping out. This research explores the process of building optimism in final year Hasanuddin University students threatened with dropout. This research, which was carried out at Hasanuddin University Makassar, was qualitative, using an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis approach. The subjects of this research were three individuals with undergraduate criteria who were at risk of dropping out, determined through a purposive sampling technique. The research results show that building optimism involves adversity, belief, consequence, disputation, and energization. Adversity findings, namely (1) difficulties in writing and research; (2) mentors who inhibit; (3) difficulty dividing time. Belief findings, namely believing that a thesis is complex and not necessary. Consequence, namely ignoring work on the thesis. Disputation, namely (1) perceived social support, (2) thinking about parents, (3) mindset. Energization findings reveal that individuals feel gratitude because of optimism.
