Direct monitoring of fiber extension by correlation-based coherent optical time-domain reflectometry
The review will not attempt to cover all methods, but will give a selection of some of the more interesting theoretical concepts, describe the current status of research and indicate where optical sensing methods are being applied in commercial instruments.

This course describes the principles and applications of optical sensors. This extends from coverage of the simplest types based on intensity measurement, versions less sensitive to cable losses, based on spectral and temporal modulation and the most sophisticated and sensitive types based on interferometry. A basic knowledge of simple optics is assumed. The course concentrates on sensors having engineering potential for a variety of practical applications and precautions necessary to make practical sensors are emphasized.
