Dr. Luis Fernandes received a degree in Applied Physics in 2006, and a Ph.D. in Physics in 2012, from the Faculty of Science at the University of Porto.
In 2008 he was awarded a Ph.D. fellowship from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. His doctoral work was researched in collaboration with the Photonics Group at the University of Toronto, where he became a postdoctoral fellow in 2013. While he was a PhD student he received the Scholarship in Optical Science and Engineering from the SPIE in 2010. From 2013 to 2018 he worked as a senior optical scientist at OZ Optics. He is a senior optical designer at VIAVI Solutions since 2018.
From 2010 to 2013 he was a member of the 1st board of the SPIE student Chapter at the University of Toronto.
He is a member of the IEEE, SPOF, SPF, OSA, and SPIE. He is a member of the IEEEXtreme Executive Committee since 2018 and he is currently the Chair of the Committee since 2021.
