Dr. Yu is Professor/Associate Chair of Doctoral Studies in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell). He received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), majoring in structural engineering, NDE of concrete structures, signal processing, and electromagnetic modeling of construction materials. He is a recipient of the 2008 ASNT Fellowship Award (Columbus, OH), 2009 NYUST Outstanding Alumni (Yunlin, Taiwan), 2010 JSPS Fellowship (Tokyo, Japan), 2021 ASNT Faculty Award (Columbus, OH), and 2022 Acorn Innovation Award (Boston, MA). He holds two U.S. patents and has published more than 30 journal papers (until 2021), 67 conference papers (until 2021), and delivered 17 conference presentations (until 2021) and 48 invited talks (until 2021). He also has published two books and two book chapters and edited several conference proceedings (until 2021).
He is Director of NDT/SHM Laboratory and Electromagnetic Remote Sensing Laboratory in Structural Engineering Research Group (SERG) at UMass Lowell. He is also Institutional Lead of U.S.DOT University Transportation Center (UTC) TIDC (Transportation Infrastructure Durability Center) at UMass Lowell (https://www.uml.edu/research/tidc/). His research has been sponsored by NSF, NIST, AFRL, DOE, U.S.DOT, UMass S&T Office, AFFOA, MassDOT, and NextFlex.
